What a day in Wellington. I knew I didn't have much time but it can down to the wire! By the time I'd got into the city it was 1:30pm. We had until 5:30pm to send our bounce boxes ahead. Laura had picked up all my groceries the night before thankfully so by the time I got to the hotel it was game on. 20 days worth of food to organise. All meals as light as possible and enough nutrition in them to semi counter the calories burn each day.
20 days X 3 meals a day plus snacks is a lot of food! Maths is also not my strong point so I may have accidentally ordered close to a 6 month supply of muesli bars. (I don't even really like them...)
I laid it all out on the bed so I could get a visual of exactly every days meals. It was stressful - over analysing every thing and questioning will I be hungry without wanting to over pack because in the end that 9 days worth of food I'm carrying on my back. Plus dividing up meals, dividing up milk powder and making an absolute mess in the process
In between sorting this I had to race to Vodafone to reactivate my NZ Sim and set up a new plan. I also had last minute things to get at Macpac & Bivouac. A beanie and another compression sack to put my tent in at last minute.
Plus we had to traipse all across town to gather 4 boxes because all the post shops only ever seemed to have 1 in the size we needed.
Add to this phone calls to the amazing people we're sending the boxes to to reconfirm addresses and details.
Forget about lunch or a coffee there was no time! With everything packed we had 10 minutes to run across the city to the last NZ Post place that was open. We made it in the door at 5:29pm, the lady not overly happy but with us explaining that we're off first thing in the morning she came around! And to our surprise it only cost $35 per 10kg box to send. We had made it!
I also had a tonne of food I'd decided not to pack so went back to the shops to return them which they'd only let me take back a few things. The remainder I asked to put in a charity bin but they didn't have one so I ended up making some young Kiwi guys day by gifting him a good few days groceries. His appreciation and excitement made up for the money I'd spent on them.
All that was left to do now was head to the waterfront for tacos and a beer! I cannot express the relief felt having those boxes sent and it now just be over to what happens on trail now, happens.
