Tomorrow I start walking. 790km of walking, from St Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees, right across Spain to Santiago de Compostela and then maybe on to Cape Finnister if my legs can take me. It hasn't really dawned on me just how much walking that is but 790km is doable right?! I trained from Paris to Bayonne and then on to St Jean Pied de Port today. A beautiful Small French village near the Pyrenees. Got off the train and joined a bunch of other walkers making a bee line to the Pilgrims office to get:
1. Info on the Camino (cant say I've done too much research for this. I was told most days you will need to be up by 6am! Ugh! I really should have looked into this more.)
2. Credential del Peregrino ‘Pilgrims passport’ (at every place you stay they stamp it and ill be able to get it verified in Santiago de Compostela when/if i get there in 35 days time…actually lets push it out to an even 6 weeks. Why rush); and
3. A place to stay. More importantly! I've nothing booked for the Camino, totally winging this whole trip. At each village you pass through there are Alburgues (pilgrim hostels) to stay at. Around 10-15 euro a night w breakfast included.
So now that I've got the 3 main things sorted. Its time to go and source lunch and snacks for tomorrow. Day 1 is meant to be the toughest day of the Camino. 27km straight up and over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles.
If you don't get another update from me I'll probably be stuck somewhere up in the mountains. And no I haven't watched ‘The Way’. x
